The Branding of Under Armour

Under Armour is a sports apparel company started in 1996 originally offering only moisture wicking form fitting clothing. Over the past thirteen years they have expanded their business to include footwear and accessories that include hats, gloves, sunglasses, and bags.
Even as the company has gown and expanded to include new products their brand image has remained consistent. They have maintained a sporty athletic image for individuals wanting apparel that can keep up with their active lifestyle.
At the moment I am having a hard time maintaining a consistent feel thorough out my portfolio. With each new project I add I feel the message I am trying to convey about my body of work and by extension who I am becomes more convoluted. Under armour has adapted and added to its product line yet they managed to keep what makes them under armour. I hope to be able to come up with a way to better manage my work through a consistent presentation that ties my various projects together into one cohesive package that hopefully represents who I am.

Seven tips for a print based portfolio

The process of creating and recreating a portfolio is something that really shows off my indecisiveness. I can make decisions regarding product design aesthetics but when it comes to creating a portfolio that represents me... I tend to draw a blank. There are so many interesting graphic design trends out there and different ways to go about presenting my work its easy to get overwhelmed. I have never taken a graphic design class and my knowledge of the subject is poor at best. So, with each new job hunting season I take a look at some nifty graphic design sites for inspiration and guidance and do my best to create my own graphic representation of my work and myself.

I use stumbleupon to find different graphic design sites and interesting posts and it is from this source that I stumbled across this post: 7 Tips For Creating a Print-Based Design Portfolio Even though this post deals with printed portfolio design I feel a lot of the advice carries over to the pdf format prevalent in my major. The advice that the article has to give goes beyond the realm of print and covers problems that all designers face when creating our portfolios.

"As a designer, building a portfolio is by far one of the most challenging tasks that you will ever encounter because there are no set rules. There is no right or wrong way to build a portfolio, only your way" - Nubbytwiglet.com

I found that quote to be particularly poignant, most of the portfolios that I have seen that I though were particularly good were also completely different from everyone else.

-The first tip is to get as much professional work in your portfolio as soon as possible. So far I have zero professional work that I can show. I understand the importance of professional work because its from the real world from real companies that need to sell real products.

-The second tip is to invest in a format that you're passionate about. I like landscape layouts but I don't know how passionate I am about a particular aspect ratio.

-The third tip is to limit the number of projects that you choose to showcase. I already limit what I show, there's no need to throw everything including the kitchen sink at a potential employer.

-The forth tip is that simple layouts are good. I understand this as the work is supposed to be center stage, but I have a hard time marrying originality and simplicity together.

-The fifth tip is to create an order that works for you. I am still struggling with where to place my best project. Some say the front because a potential employer may not flip through the whole portfolio others say the back to leave on a high note.

-The sixth tip is to get feedback. I need to do this more often rather than just going it alone slowly going crazy with the decision to use or not use a drop shadow.

-The seventh tip is the one I like most of all. Accept that your portfolio is never really finished. I am fully aware of this...every day, but its nice to know that my portfolio can always be a little better if I keep working on it.

Myself and my goals

Well this blog has sat stagnant for a while now but hopefully my new design communication class will help me to resurrect my blogging abilities. Normally my online life consists of twitter and facebook, but with my dwindling interest in facebook perhaps I can spend some more time here sharing my thoughts and maybe even some sweet design work.

With the start of this new school year I feel more pressure now to live up to being an upperclassmen with sweet design skills; but I suppose its all up to me in becoming the designer I want to be. With that in mind I have some goals that I’ve set for myself to become a well-rounded designer.

- I need to get better at documenting and showing my design process. Right now my portfolio has no process at all. Sketches are nice, but process is what drives good design. This quarter’s I.D. project is going to be my first real attempt at illustrating what is going through my head when I’m designing a solution to a problem.

- Sketching, the classic goal for most every designer. I already have a decent pen style that is fine for illustrating my ideas, but I would like to be more versatile and sketch in other mediums and become more dynamic.

Both of these goals are completely within my grasp to meet and exceed in the span of this quarter. I only need to pay attention and document when designing to meet my design process goal; and step outside of my comfort zone to become a more dynamic sketcher.

Industrial Design Project for Prejunior Year

Well this new project for I.D. studio looks pretty interesting. The problem statement is to design a product with a lighting element that is centered around branding research and branding identity. I have some nifty brand ideas and and some product concepts. I'm going to do my best to approach this project the right way by doing legitimate research, super sweet sketches, and actually taking pictures of process. I want this project to be kick ass for my portfolio and I think it will be.

For the short term this blog will be used solely as the process book for my current I.D. project. As things progress I will use this blog to post all the random sketches, renderings, and anything else I decide to do in my free time that I want to show off.
